Fata Morgana (serial no 13203) silver and black (unpainted aluminum?) binoculars with a “straw pattern” embossed design. This indicates that the straw [pattern design existed at least within the serial range of #6532-13203, and this is one of three known Fata Morgana binoculars with this straw pattern of embossing. This binocular probably had the straw pattern embossing on the frame, as is the case with the earlier examples #6532 and #8383 , but in this case was painted black, either originally, or perhaps later. |
Fata Morgana (serial no 6532) all silver (unpainted aluminum?) binoculars with a “straw pattern” embossed design. This indicates that the straw [pattern design existed at least within the serial range of #6532-13203, and this is one of three known Fata Morgana binoculars with this straw pattern of embossing. Unlike #8383 and 13203, the straw pattern is all silver with no black wash. Also there is no prism cover power marking (like “4x”). |

These quite early black Fata Morgana binoculars with lorgnette handle serial #3880 are the earliest Fata Morgana binoculars with handle I am aware of, and thay have a number of interesting differences from (later) others of this type I have seen or own. The handle is iridescent. One prism cover has the Fata Morgana logo plus a styled emblem of a prismatic binocular. And the double jointed Lorgnette handle design on this allows the mechanism to fold within the width of the binoculars and this is the only handle of this that design that I have seen on Fata Morgana binoculars. Only a small percentage of Fata Morgana binoculars of any pattern or decoration or finish seem to have been made with opera glass handles, and may be because these were a very expensive luxury item in comparison to readily available much less expensive ordinary non prismatic opera glasses with their handles. |

Optisch Werst ä tten Alfred Bauman of Cassel (Kassel), apparently also made and/or marketed a non prismatic more conventional Galilean opera glass, marked with their ABC logo as used on the prismatic Fata Morgana and Optistar binoculars. These appear to be made of the molded bakelite resin that had been developed in 1907 ( Polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride). |

Alfred Bauman Fata Morgana envelope to A. Leitz Co San Francisco Ca., USA, Collection of Mark Ohno (with help of Ron Rosen) |
This interesting envelope from Alfred Bauman was addressed to A. Lietz Co. of 61 Post St., San Francisco Ca (also with facilities at 632-634 Commercial St., San Francisco Ca.), a distributor of optical, surveying, mechanical drawing , barometric & temperature, and scientific instruments and manufacturer of scientific instruments. The California State library holds their 1926 catalog (which has Hensoldt binoculars), and the Smithsonian Museum holds other catalogs (which I have not seen). I am having trouble understanding the postmark date (expert suggestions welcome). |
Guilded Fata Morgana with Mother of Pearl Opera Glass or Lorgnette Handle. Vergoldete Fata Morgana mit Perlmutt-Opernglas oder Lorgnette-Griff. Some of my lorgnette handle Fata Morgana binoculars use a slotted positive lock primary pivot, a foolproof method of design that locks the handles into a predetermined angle. For example my guilded Fata Morgana with telescoping long lorgnette handle binoculars serial numbers 12679, 12691, 14971, 20241, have the positive lock pivot. |
Fata Morgana binoculars with Lorgnette Handles: Slotted Pivot or Friction Pivot. |
Some of my lorgnette handle Fata Morgana binoculars use a screw tension friction primary pivot, a somewhat problematic method to hold the handle at an angle. For example my embossed Fata Morgana with short lorgnette handle binoculars serial number 8383 and my black Fata Morgana binoculars with short lorgnette handle binoculars serial numbers 14133, and 21228 have friction pivots. However my guilded Fata Morgana with extra long double lorgnette handle binoculars serial number 22366 also have a friction pivot. |
Fata Morgan binoculars with lorgnette handles use two different types of pivots: a friction pivot mostly on short handle models, and a positive lock slot pivot mostly on telescoping long handle models. |
Guilded fata morgana binoculars were a small fraction of fata morgana binocular production. And lornette handle fata morgana models were a very small fraction of fata morgana production, with most black or various shades of cream or white bakelite. Mother of pearl handled lorgnette handle were apparently an extremely small fraction of lorgnette handled fata morgana binoculars production. A small fraction of lorgnette handled fata morgana binoculars were double fold extra long handles. A fraction of lorgnette handled fata morgana binoculars used a friction pivot, which works poorly to fix the angle of the relatively heavy binoculars on the handle. Most used a positive locking slot arrangement. So my guilded fata morgana binoculars serial number 22366 with mother of pearl lorgnette handle, friction pivot, and extra long double pivot handle are quite unusual. |
