Gould Lens service was apparently a one man shop run from the family home and started after the war by Kelsey (Burr) Gould whose primary consumer business was binocular and camera repair and whose industrial business was custom lens grinding and prototyping. Kelsey apparently died in 2006 at age 92.

Brands: NIPPON KOGAKU, LUPINUS, OFUNA KOGAKU, ASAHI KOGAKU, OKAYA KOGAKU, MEIJI SEIKO miniature binoculars. This is a great little catalog showing what was available in Tokyo at the time. According to Ulrike Schaede and William Grainer in “Japan’s Mangled Globalization ”, Japan had an excise luxury tax system of 50%-60% around that time (15% in the 1960’s). Tax free stores sold goods to foreigners who would “export” the purchased item, and there was a system set up for them to have on the excise tax designed for domestic purchasers refunded. Catalog is probably a US soldier ot tourist bring back.
